Passive Night Splint

The passive night splint slowly lengthens the plantar fascia ligament and Achilles tendon over time with the gentle stretching angle so no extra pressure or strain is put on either of these tissues. A passive night splint is usually a brace that goes on the front of the foot and is a lighter and more compact type of splint due to no need for an increase in the stretch angle.

Passive night splints are categorized by a gentle stretch the angle at which the splint holds the foot. Dorsal night splints, which hold the foot in a flexed position or at a 90* angle, such as when you are standing, are passive splints.

Passive style splints or braces are commonly used for patients who have sensitive feet, such as diabetics, or individuals who have very inflamed and sensitive plantar fascia ligaments or Achilles tendons. Morning heel pain results from the plantar fascia ligament and the Achilles tendon tightening up at night and when weight is put on the feet, it can cause pain. The passive night splint keeps these tissues relaxed and stretched out during the night with a gentle stretch angle.

Orthopedists and podiatrist alike prescribe passive night splints for the treatment of plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis, and chronic heel pain. Passive splints are the most popular among users since these splints usually feature less bulk and weight and are usually easier to sleep in and keep on throughout the night, as well as the minimal designs of these braces retain less heat and are suited for comfortable sleeping temperatures.

With maximum results seen after only four to twelve weeks, the passive style of night splint is an attractive solution to morning heel pain and pain from plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis. The passive style of stretch ensures that your feet will increasingly gain length in the tissues and maintain the length gained by nightly use.
